Joke van Leeuwen – a world between two ears
Documentary ’58
Joke van Leeuwen is a remarkable Dutch author. For her highly authentic work she received many awards, including the two most important prizes for Dutch literature (AKO and Gouden Griffel). Yet she is almost unknown in the Netherlands. Something hinders her to draw attention to herself. The accessibility she shows in her work is in contrast to the exile she chooses in life. Director Heddy Honigmann is exceptionally suitable to introduce the life and work of Joke van Leeuwen. The film investigates from which soul Joke’s unrestricted and imaginative spirit comes. A soul that, as a person, seems to be secondary to her art.
